Dr. Derrick Esplin is both a CPA and a CMA and often encourages his students to pursue both of these accounting credentials. He started his accounting career in public accounting, working as a tax accountant, and then migrated to private industry, working as a Controller and CFO. He then got into accounting education and found that he truly loves teaching! He views accounting not just as a technical discipline but as a language for understanding and improving business decisions.
Dr. Esplin’s research interests include performance measurement systems, corporate governance, and the integration of technology and analytics in management accounting. With a background in both academia and practice, he is passionate about helping students connect theory to practice and develop the analytical skills needed for today’s dynamic financial environment.
In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, spending time with his family, mountain biking, and snowboarding. He is also a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and has seen them in concert seven times.
